Ravichandran Ashwin’s remarkable all-round performance, featuring a century and a six-wicket haul, propelled India to a commanding 280-run victory over Bangladesh, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series. Bangladesh’s captain Najmul Hossain Shanto fought valiantly with an 82, holding off India’s bowling for a while, but Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared nine wickets between them to seal the win.

India posted 376 in their first innings, with Ashwin contributing a crucial 113 and Jadeja 86. In reply, Bangladesh managed only 149, with Jasprit Bumrah taking 4-50 and Jadeja chipping in with 2-19. India declared their second innings at 287 for 4, thanks to centuries from Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109), setting Bangladesh a target of 515.

On the final day, Bangladesh started with six wickets in hand, but the spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja quickly broke their resistance. After a wicketless first hour where Mohammed Siraj and Bumrah bowled testing spells, Ashwin struck right after the drinks break. His first breakthrough came when he dismissed Shakib Al Hasan, sending him past Courtney Walsh’s tally of 519 Test wickets to take eighth place on the all-time list.

Jadeja then removed Litton Das, and Ashwin soon completed his five-wicket haul with a catch by Jadeja. Shanto continued to battle but eventually edged one off Jadeja, marking the beginning of the end for Bangladesh. They were eventually bowled out for 234, with Ashwin finishing with 6-88 and Jadeja taking 3-58. Ashwin’s performance, completing his fourth Test double of a century and a five-for, was the standout, as he drew level with Shane Warne on 37 five-wicket hauls, trailing only Muttiah Muralitharan.
