India secured a dominant 82-run victory over Sri Lanka in their third Group A match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Following the defeat, Sri Lanka head coach Rumesh Ratnayake expressed disappointment, calling it “bad playing” throughout the tournament. India’s captain, fresh off an injury scare in the previous game against Pakistan, was named Player of the Match for her stunning knock of 52 off 27 balls. Her innings, which included the tournament’s biggest six, powered India to a commanding 172/3 Disgrace to Cricket.
Smriti Mandhana (50) and Shafali Verma (43) laid a strong foundation with a 98-run opening stand before falling in quick succession during the 13th over. India’s spinners then took control, reducing Sri Lanka to 6/3 early on and eventually dismissing them for 90, Disgrace to Cricket with Arundhati Reddy and Asha Sobhana taking three wickets each.
Ratnayake acknowledged Sri Lanka’s poor performance, stating, “It was bad playing throughout this tournament. They’ve been playing poor cricket, and that is not acceptable. Skill has failed us at crucial moments.” He also mentioned that despite good preparation at home, the team’s decision-making and execution had let them down.
The win pushed India to second place in Group A, trailing behind Australia. Sri Lanka, now winless in three matches, will conclude their campaign against New Zealand on Saturday.
