Pant Re-Enters Test Batting Rankings at No. 6 After Chennai Century
Pant re-enters Test batting rankings at No. 6 after Chennai century. Rishabh Pant has made a comeback in the ICC Test batting rankings, entering at No. 6 after a stellar performance in Chennai. Pant, playing Test cricket for the first time in almost two years since a car accident nearly ended his career, scored 39 and 109 runs (off just 128 balls) in India’s 280-run victory over Bangladesh in their first Test in Chennai. This century propelled him straight to the sixth position with 731 rating points.
Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prabath Jayasuriya were also significant movers in the Test rankings. Jaiswal, previously at No. 6, climbed to fifth place due to his score of 56 in India’s first innings, reaching 751 points. Joe Root continues to lead the rankings with 899 points, followed by Kane Williamson, who scored 55 and 30 in New Zealand’s 63-run defeat in Galle, with 852 points. Daryl Mitchell (760 points) and Steven Smith (757 points) held their positions just above Jaiswal.
India’s Rohit Sharma, however, dropped sharply in the rankings. Following scores of 6 and 5 in Chennai, he moved from No. 5 to No. 10, just four points ahead of Babar Azam in 11th. Virat Kohli also dropped five places to No. 12 after managing only 6 and 17 in the same match, while Shubman Gill rose five spots to 14th after his unbeaten 119 in the second innings against Bangladesh.
On the bowling side, Prabath Jayasuriya was the standout performer, earning the Player-of-the-Match award in Galle with figures of 4 for 136 and 5 for 68. This achievement propelled him five places up to No. 8. The bowling rankings continue to be dominated by Australian and Indian players. R Ashwin (0 for 29 and 6 for 88 in Chennai) remains at No. 1, followed by Jasprit Bumrah (4 for 50 and 1 for 24) at No. 2. Following Bumrah are Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Kagiso Rabada. Ravindra Jadeja is in sixth place (2 for 19 and 3 for 58), while Nathan Lyon sits at No. 7.
Kamindu Mendis also made a notable improvement in the batting rankings, moving up three spots to 16th after scoring 114 in the first innings against New Zealand.
ODI Rankings: Gurbaz and Head Rise
Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Australia’s Travis Head were the big movers in the ODI batting rankings. Despite being dismissed for a duck in the first ODI against South Africa in Sharjah, Gurbaz rebounded by scoring 105 off 110 balls and 89 off 94 balls in the next two games, helping Afghanistan clinch a 2-1 series win. This achievement made him the first Afghan player to break into the top 10 among ODI batters, placing him in eighth, up by ten spots.
Travis Head also made an impressive climb, going up seven spots to No. 9 after scoring a massive 154 not out off 129 balls in the first ODI against England, where he also took 2 for 34 with the ball.
Rashid Khan was another standout performer in the Afghanistan-South Africa series. Rashid took seven wickets in Afghanistan’s two victories, which propelled him up by eight spots to No. 3 in the ODI bowling rankings, now only behind Keshav Maharaj and Adam Zampa lisalavoie.com.
