South Africa was struggling against India’s spinners, but they found a way through to level the series. Tristan Stubbs admitted that he was “proper nervous” and just tried to control his breathing as he struck an unbeaten 47 off 41 balls, guiding South Africa to a three-wicket victory in the second T20I against India.

“I was just trying to breathe,” he said with a smile after the game. “It’s my favorite place to play cricket, and I was nervous, proper nervous, so I was just trying to control my breathing.”

Stubbs grew up in Knysna, a small town about 260 kilometers away from Gqeberha, and has played all his domestic and franchise cricket at St George’s Park. This inning was even more special for Stubbs, as it was his mom’s birthday, and he had plenty of family and friends in the crowd who had come down to the ground to celebrate.

“There’s normally a whole bunch of them [friends and family], probably around 30 to 35 of them,” Stubbs said. “They usually come down once a year for the SA20, and they made the trip this time. It’s my mom’s birthday too, so it’s a sort of celebration.”

Before joining the team, he visited everyone at the house where they were staying. “So yeah, it’s been a really good day,” he added Stubbs channels his nerves to continue breakout run.

Stubbs came in to bat at 33 for 2 in the sixth over, with South Africa chasing a target of 125. He saw his team slip to 66 for 6 in the 13th over, and soon it was 86 for 7 in the 16th. But with crucial support from Gerald Coetzee, he put up an unbroken 42-run partnership for the ninth wicket in just 20 balls.

“Fortunately, the run rate never got away from us,” Stubbs said of the chase. “Once we lost the wickets Stubbs channels his nerves to continue breakout run, I had 30 in mind for the last three overs, and then G [Coetzee] came in and played an innings that helped us out. Fortunately, we got over the line.”

Stubbs recalled Coetzee’s confidence as he walked in to bat. “He said straight away, ‘We can win this,’ and I believed it the whole time. We were always just two hits away from being back to a run-a-ball, and having the crowd behind us was amazing.”

Stubbs was up against an intense spell by Varun Chakravarthy, who ripped through South Africa’s middle order, claiming a career-best 5 for 17. Ravi Bishnoi also kept things tight at the other end, but Stubbs took his time before taking on the fast bowlers at the end. He admitted that South Africa’s batters were out-skilled by the two spinners on a pitch that “typically stayed low,” but he was glad to remain at the crease till the end to secure the win.

“They [Chakravarthy and Bishnoi] were doing just enough to beat you on either side,” Stubbs said. “It wasn’t easy to come in and even rotate the strike, let alone take them on. They are two of the best spinners in the world, so when they’re on, it’s really tough. They got the better of us in the middle by just out-skilling us.”

“So yeah, it was really nice to get the team over the line and remain not out at the end. I think, as someone who bats in the middle, that’s the whole goal when chasing—get the team over the line while staying not out.”

When asked what has brought about this maturity in his game, Stubbs replied, “I don’t actually know how to answer that. It’s just been nice. I really enjoy the longer format because you get more time in the middle without feeling the need to play a big shot, and I enjoy the grind of batting long.”

“I think the longer format of cricket naturally helps your T20 game—understanding batsmanship, spending time in the middle lisalavoie.com, and not needing to make a play really helps across all formats. That’s probably been the biggest thing.”
